The Professional Librarian Paradox
In a blog post, "Ten Reasons Why 'Professional Librarian' Is an Oxymoron" Ryan Deschamps facilitated a world-wide discussion about the value (or lack of value) of professional status both within and without the library community. In reality, the idea of professionalism is challenged throughout many disciplines from a variety of angles, reflecting a world whose values have changed drastically in a very short time. What do such challenges mean for libraries and librarians in the 21st century? If one believes Deschamps' "ten reasons," what alternatives can bring the desired change? If not, what needs to be done to protect the image of the professional librarian in society? Ryan Deschamps will attempt to put his blog post in a global context and share his thoughts about the multifaceted responses he received from this piece.
