1996 Census of Agriculture Guide

WHAT IS THE 1996 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE?

The Census of Agriculture is the basic inventory of Canadian agriculture taken every five years and is conducted in conjunction with the Census of population. It produces a profile of Canadian agriculture operations by providing statistics at natio nal, provincial and subprovincial levels, on such topics as crop areas, number of livestock, number and value of farm machinery, farm operating expenses and receipts, purchases of capital assets, weeks of paid labour, and land management practices.

The Census of Agriculture also profiles farm operators based on characteristics such as their age, sex, residence status, farm work, non-farm work and injuries. The Census identifies trends, issues and successes within the agricultural community.
