What is it?
The Population Projections for Canada, Provinces, and Territories CD-ROM presents 2000-based
population projections by age and sex for Canada, Provinces, and Territories to 2026. The
projections in this report use the 2000 preliminary population estimates as their base which are
based on the 1996 Census. Four out of sixteen series were selected for this volume to keep it
within manageable limits. They provide plausible maximum, medium, and minimum population
growth levels for each province/territory and for Canada as a whole. An appendix is provided
that contains the detailed tables of the four projections selected, and a summary table of the 12
additional projections.
Accessing the Population Projections CD-ROM
1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Double click on the 'Projections' icon.
3. Choose the desired language.
4. Indicate your acceptance of the licence agreement to access the main screen. Otherwise you
will exit the product.
Main Screen
The main screen opens up into three application blocks: Publication, Data, and Acrobat Reader.
You can access a particular box by clicking it with the left mouse button. You can exit each box
by going to 'File' and then 'Exit', and you can exit the CD by going to 'Exit' at the bottom of the
main screen.
Publication
This box contains the details of the study. It contains a glossary to explain terms, and an
appendix, charts, and text tables sections that hold the titles of the relevant tables or charts
that belong tot he study, these are available in the 'Data' box.
Searching in Publication
There are several methods to find information in this section.
1. You could scroll through each section to get relevant information, this would be the most time consuming method to use.
2. If you know exactly what information you are looking for you could go to the 'table of contents' page and look for it, or anything related to your query. Once it is found, take note of the section number and click it on the left side of the screen. Once in the relevant section you could scroll through it to find the information or you could conduct a 'find' search for your query.
For example, if 'fertility' was our search query, I could scroll through the table of contents for any relevant information. As you may have noticed, 'fertility projections' is found under "Methods and Assumptions", which is Section 1.
Now you can click "Methods and Assumptions" on the left side of the screen. The section is then displayed on screen.
To find information on fertility, I could either scroll through the section displayed on screen, or we could conduct a find search:
A. To do a find search, click on the 'find' button (binocular button), in the top menu. In the 'find what' bar type in our query, which is 'fertility'. Then select 'find'.
B. The word will appear highlighted in the document. To continue the word search, return to the find screen and click 'find again'. This can be continued until the whole document is searched.
3. Another method of searching for data is simply using the 'find search' in the table of
contents page instead of scrolling through it. Use the same steps as outlined above, this
can be repeated until the whole document is searched. If you would like to begin a new
search, simply delete the existing query word and type in a new one.
Data
This section contains all tables and charts related to the 4 series in the study. It also contains summary tables for the 12 additional series not used in the study.
Note: Each table in all projections, including the 12 additional projections are similar, they differ in only scenarios. "Assumption" and "Components" deal with fertility, birth, death, immigration, emigration, etc. "Single age" tables concern population projections by age for each year up until 2026 for each province/territory or Canada as a whole.
Projection 1- Low Growth Scenario
This section contains population projections by age and gender and components of
population growth. Activate this section by clicking on the highlighted title.
Once in a document, you can move from screen to screen by clicking on the tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
The first tab is 'notes', it explains what is in the section.
The second tab is 'assumptions', it contains an overview of the low-growth scenario.
The third tab is 'components', it contains the components of population growth.
The fourth tab is 'single age', it contains yearly information of population by age.
Projection 2- Medium Growth Scenario
This section contains population projections by age and gender and components of
population growth. Activate this section by clicking on the highlighted title.
Once in a document, you can move from screen to screen by clicking on the tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
The first tab is 'notes', it explains what is in the section.
The second tab is 'assumptions', it contains an overview of the medium-growth scenario.
The third tab is 'components', it contains the components of population growth.
The fourth tab is 'single age', it contains yearly information of population by age.
Projection 3- High Growth Scenario- Interprovincial Migration (West)
This section contains population projections by age and gender and components of
population growth. Activate this section by clicking on the highlighted title.
Once in a document, you can move from screen to screen by clicking on the tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
The first tab is 'notes', it explains what is in the section.
The second tab is 'assumptions', it contains an overview of the high-growth (West) scenario.
The third tab is 'components', it contains the components of population growth.
The fourth tab is 'single age', it contains yearly information of population by age.
Note: An error exists in this section concerning the 'assumptions' table. It is not legible,
in order to fix it go to 'View' in the top menu. Then select 'zoom', and once here, change
the magnification to 100% as opposed to the 75% shown. Select OK.
Projection 4- High Growth Scenario- Interprovincial Migration (Central)
This section contains population projections by age and gender and components of
population growth. Activate this section by clicking on the highlighted title.
Once in a document, you can move from screen to screen by clicking on the tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
The first tab is 'notes', it explains what is in the section.
The second tab is 'assumptions', it contains an overview of the high-growth (Central) scenario.

The fourth tab is 'single age', it contains yearly information of population by age.
Below the four projection series, is the "Additional Projections" title. Clicking on this will
bring you to the 12 individual projections not in the study. To activate one, click on the
blue title. The tab sections in the additional projections are the same as the four
projections listed above.
Acrobat Reader
This block contains information on how to use the software that the data is contained on.
The arrows explained in this section can help you maneuver throughout the CD quickly and easily.
Sample Search
This search can be used to familiarize yourself with the CD. For this particular search our search
query will be 'immigration'.
1. Our first step is to go to the 'Publication' box. Once here, go to the 'table of contents' screen.
Look for anything relating to immigration.
2. As you can see, Section 1 'Methods and Assumptions' contains a section labeled 'immigration
projections'. Now, click 'Methods and Assumptions' on the left side of the screen.
3. Once here, conduct a 'find' search (explained earlier) to find the information, using 'immigration projections' as the search query.
4. The relevant section is displayed on screen. If more information is needed you could return to
the table of contents and search again. Or, you could do a find search on the whole document
using 'immigration' as the search query.
5. Once finished here, exit the 'publication' box by going to 'file' and then 'exit'. Then click on
the 'data' box.
6. All scenarios in this section involve immigration. For this query we will be interested in 'Projection 2- Medium Growth Scenario'. Click this title.
7. The 'assumptions' and 'components' tables both contain information concerning immigration.
Scroll down through them to find relevant information, or print them by going to 'file' and then 'print'.
8. If desired this can be repeated for the remaining 3 projections, and for the twelve additional projections. For this search, however, we will only concern ourselves with one projection.
9. Once all information is found, exit the 'data' box by going to 'file' and 'exit'. Then exit the
CD by selecting 'exit' at the bottom of the main screen.
