Study Room Policy
The library has a number of single and group study rooms available for checkout. Use is restricted to Memorial's Health Sciences
students. The rooms must be checked out at the Circulation desk, and are available on a first come basis for a 2 hour loan period.
Library policies apply - this includes no food, drinks in approved containers, and keeping noise to a low
level. Abuse of policies will result in loss of room use. Please read the
library policies for further information.
Reason for Policy
Study room checkout is intended to help preserve availability for, and use by, students in Memorial's Health Sciences programs.
It is also intended to help provide a more equitable, appropriate and sustained use of the rooms.
Checking Room Availability
You can check room availability by looking in the library catalogue, under Reserve Desk, and using rooms as the course ID. You can
also ask at the Circulation desk.
A. Single study rooms (S1 - S5)
- Use is restricted to Memorial's Health Sciences students with valid library cards.
- Rooms are available on a first come first served basis - no advance bookings are available.
- Rooms are available for a 2 hour loan period, renewable after 20 minutes if no-one else has requested it.
If no one else is waiting, you may remain in the room for that 20 minutes before renewing. Moving immediately to another room
is the equivalent of renewing.
- The intention is that the room is actually occupied for the majority of that 2 hours, and that the room is not being used
as temporary storage or as a way to advance book.
B. Group study rooms (G1 - G9)
- Use is restricted to Memorial's Health Sciences students, with valid library cards, and to groups of 2 or more people.
At least 2 of the group must be present for checkout.
- Rooms are available on a first come first served basis - no advance bookings are available.
- Rooms are available for a 2 hour loan period, renewable after 20 minutes if no-one else has requested it. If no one else is
waiting, you may remain in the room for that 20 minutes before renewing. Moving immediately to another room is the equivalent
of renewing.
- The intention is that the room is actually occupied by 2 or more people for the majority of that 2 hour period. The
intention is not for a relay use of the room by single individuals, nor for temporary storage, or as a way to advance book a
room.
C. Assigned single study rooms (S6 - S15)
- Single rooms (S6-S15), and their keys, are assigned to graduate students in the MUN Division of Community Health as per an
arrangement negotiated between the Faculty of Medicine and the Health Sciences Library
- Keys are checked out to Graduate Students when they arrive in the library and are returned when they leave the library
- Library policies apply to rooms, including no food or cell phone use, drinks only in approved containers, and keeping noise
to a low level.
- The University is not responsible for items left in the room. NOTE: although the door locks, you should not consider the
room as secure.
- Library material must be checked out before taken to a room. Rooms will be checked periodically and library materials not signed
out will be removed.
- The user cannot affix items to the windows or walls. Garbage must be placed in the cans outside the rooms. Spills or other problems
must be reported to Circulation. The library will periodically post notice and arrange for cleaning of the rooms.
- Abuse of privileges will result in loss of room use. Loss or non-return of key will result in a non-refundable $10.00 fee.
D. Group projects room (H 1648)
Book the Group Projects Room
All policies are the same as for Group study rooms (G1 - G9) with the following exceptions:
- Priority for use of this room will be given to groups requiring use of its technical equipment: computer display projector,
large display screen, or laptop power connections.
- Booking is available for this room a maximum of 48 hours in advance of the requested time. If the room is unclaimed after
20 minutes from the start time of the booking, the room becomes available for other eligible users. Advanced bookings may be
made at the Health Sciences Library Circulation desk in person, by phone at 777-6671, or by the Group Projects Room booking
form on the library Web Site. Advanced bookings may be made for one 2 hour loan period subject to renewal if no other booking has
been made for the room. A maximum of one advance booking per day for the group projects room will be accepted.
- Technical equipment problems should be reported to Circulation who will arrange for technical support.
- Groups are responsible for cleaning the room and ensuring that equipment is properly turned off before leaving at the end
of the reserved time. Failure to comply will result in loss of room use.
- The Health Sciences Library will notify any booked groups if the room or its equipment becomes unavailable.
