Many of you will already have access to our services via the Newfoundland and Labarador Health Knowledge Information Network(NLHKIN). Check to see whether your organization is a corporate member, or consider a personal membership.
Individuals may borrow materials in person by obtaining a Health Sciences Guest Borrower's Card. This card is free of charge UNLESS you require borrowing privileges for the rest of the University Libraries System. You must update your Library Card periodically at the Circulation Desk. Further information on policies and procedures are available on the handout "Information for Guest Borrowers".
Generally, books and cd-roms are 2 week loan, periodicals older than 4 years are 3-day loan, and audio-visuals are 1 week. Items, except periodicals, can be renewed, provided that there is NO HOLD OR RECALL on it.
There are a number of workstations within the library that provide access to all of our electronic journals, other resources and the Internet. For more information, see About the Library.
The Library's e-journals are generally not available from outside the Library nor off campus, unless you are also a member of the University. However, you can connect to key health databases, eletronic journals and electronic textbooks through our NLHKIN service.
To obtain material from the Health Sciences Library:
Individuals are expected to submit document delivery requests via their hospital or regional health library if they have one. If there isn't one, requests to obtain photocopies or borrow material may be submitted directly to our Document Delivery section. The library reserves the right to limit the number of requests to 5 per day per requester.
For material NOT held by the Health Sciences Library:
This service is for use by practitioners who do NOT have a library service through their own organization. Requests for books or photocopies may be submitted directly to our Document Delivery section. The library reserves the right to limit the number of requests to 5 per day per requester.
If you use PubMed, see also Loansome Doc Service
Contact the Information Desk in person, by telephone, fax, email or the Ask a Librarian form. We also provide a Computerized Literature Search Service.
Professional librarians provide instruction and training in the use of library databases and research tools. Instruction is available for individuals or groups, and can be tailored to specific subjects, needs or times. For more information, see Information Literacy Instruction.
Photocopiers are located across from the Circulation Desk. The main printers for the public computers, scanner, and microform reader are located in the photocopy room. The cost for a print/photocopy is $0.05 per impression. All machines accept the MUN Campus Card. This card can be purchased for $2.00, and money added to it, from the "Card Manager" unit located near the Information Desk. The unit can issue receipts. To obtain small print jobs without using a MUN Campus Card, cash payment is possible by arrangement at the Circulation Desk and at a cost of $0.10 per impression. Colour printing is $0.20 per impression and also by arrangement at the Circulation Desk.
