Search Tips

It is important to use the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Bibliography's "Go Back," "Next" and "Previous" buttons, not those provided by your browser, to navigate between screens in your search session.

Truncation $ (dollar sign) e.g., gene$ retrieves gene, genes, general, genet, genetics etc.
nurs$ retrieves nurse, nurses, nursing etc.
Wildcard ? (question mark) e.g., wom?n retrieves women and woman
The ? replaces 1 letter (internal truncation only).
Combining terms use Boolean operators - and, or, not - and parentheses ( ) where necessary. More information
If no operator is used, records are retrieved that have the terms in the same field.
Phrase searching Use single quotation marks (' ') and enter words in the order you want them searched, e.g., 'family practice'

Keyword Search

Use Keyword search to find terms in any order.

  1. Under Search for use the drop down menu to select the field (or where to search the concept), e.g. Search everything (searches all the fields), Author, Title, Subject or Journal.
  2. Enter your search term(s).
  3. Click the Search HEALTHBIB button.
  4. To perform a new search, use the New Search button.
Note: The Previous Searches feature does NOT work at this time.

Author Search

Authors have been entered with one or two inititals. Enter the author's name in the format of surname followed by initials. Omit punctuation.
NOTE: For best results, enter only the author surname, e.g.

Title Search

Title searches retrieve records with terms in the Title, Other Title, Main Title and Series fields.

Subject Search

NOTE: Although Subject searches should retrieve records with terms in the Subject and General Subject fields, records with term(s) in the Subject field are retrieved, but searches using using terms from the General Subject field do NOT provide accurate results at this time.

Journal Search

Enter the journal abbreviation or terms from the full journal title.

Record Number Search

To retrieve a specifc record, select Search everything and enter the record number followed by {001}.

Limits

Searches can be limited by document type: article, book, chapter, or thesis.
Searches can be limited by year, e.g.
1975
1981-2001
>2000 (greater than 2000)
<1950 (less than 1950)

Advanced Search

Select Advanced Search for complex searches, to search in more than one field and limit searches by language as well as document type and year.

Browse

Use Browse to find an EXACT title, author, subject or journal.
Enter terms in the EXACT order you wish them searched. An alphabetical list of results will be displayed.
Omit initial articles at the beginning of a title or full journal name, e.g.
a, an, the, le, la, les, un, une

Browse Author

Authors have been entered in the database using one or two initials.
Enter the author's name. A list of authors is displayed.
NOTE: Although you can browse an author surname followed by one or two intials, for more comprehensive results, enter only the author's surname, e.g.

Browse Title

Enter terms in the exact order to be searched. A list of titles from Title, Other Title, and Series is displayed.
NOTE: Titles from the Main Title field are NOT retrieved at this time.

Browse Subject

Enter terms in the exact order to be searched. A list of subjects from the General Subject field is displayed.
NOTE: Terms from the Subject field are NOT retrieved at this time.

Browse Journal

Enter the journal abbreviation or the full journal title. A list of journals is displayed.

Search Results

Search results will display in a numbered list, in reverse chronological order, giving brief citation information.
NOTE: In the hit list of results, only the first author is displayed. Click Full Details button at the left, to view the full record.

To mark records, click in the Keep check box next to a record to mark it for printing, e-mailing, or downloading. Then click Print/Email on the blue bar.

A number of view options are available: full, brief and all. The default is full.

To print or save your results, click View and then use your browser's print or save options.

To email your results, enter your full email address and click Email.
NOTE: The sort feature does NOT work.

The Hit list provides brief information to identify the item. Only the first author is displayed.

The Brief view provides the citation, including all the authors, plus the record number.
For journal articles, the full journal title is also displayed.

In the Full view, the brief view is enhanced with the addition of the following fields: subject, general subject, availability (links to the MUN Libraries' Catalogue records and full-text links), unique ID (mainly PubMed), copy note and the original record number from the Bibliography of Health Care in Newfoundland.

All fields are displayed in the All view.
