Your Student ID Card with the current semester sticker is your library card. Each semester, you should update your card at the circulation desk to obtain Library privileges and receive your PIN Number. Your Card is necessary to sign out books, audiovisual materials, and to renew books. Your PIN Number is needed to use the MY ACCOUNT services in the library catalogue.
Students may borrow books for 2 weeks (normally). You must present your borrower card to borrow library materials. Book loans can be renewed, unless someone else has put a HOLD on them. Renew books in person, by telephone or through MY ACCOUNT in the catalogue. Books will be recalled 2 weeks after the initial charge out date when required by another patron. Books may be recalled IMMEDIATELY if needed for Reserve.
Through Document Delivery, books and photocopies of periodical articles which are not available in Memorial University collections are obtained from other libraries worldwide. The Document Delivery service is available to all students. Average delivery time is 7-14 days. To order an item through Document Delivery fill in the Document Delivery Request Form.
Through Intercampus Loans, books may be borrowed and photocopies obtained from other Memorial University libraries. This service is provided free of charge to students. Average delivery time for Intercampus Loans is 3-7 working days. To obtain articles, complete the Intercampus Loan Article Form. Books can be ordered directly through the library catalogue. The Media collection is located near the entrance of the Reference/Reading Room. Media materials include cassettes, CD-ROMs, diskettes, films, ship drawings, slides, and videotapes. All materials are listed in the Memorial University Libraries catalogue. Media materials are loaned for 1 or 2 weeks ; they can be recalled IMMEDIATELY for in-class use.
CNA Library Services is proud to offer off-campus access to our subscription databases and web sites via CNA user name and password. Starting immediately, students and staff can get off-campus access to the EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and NewsCan (NL Newspapers) databases and the Canadian Business Resource, Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online, and Oxford Reference Online Premium Collection web sites through the Library Services web site. Access the databases through our Find Articles page and the web sites through the Find Web Sites page. Just select the database or web site you would like to access. You will then be prompted to enter your CNA user name and password as you would for Webmail. Be sure to include EDU/ or AD/ before your user name. For more assistance, contact your campus library staff.
There are two photocopiers in the Dr. C.R. Barrett Library, and another one near the elevator on the main floor of the Marine Institute building. Photocopies cost $0.10 per page. A microfiche reader/printer is available in the library. Copies cost $0.15 per page. Copiers and limited office supplies can be found in the library's Information Commons
The Reserve collection comprises books and articles which are required/recommended readings for courses offered each semester. There are copies of some assignment solutions and old exams on reserve. Reserve materials may be borrowed on short term loan for 2 hours, 1 day or 3 days as determined by faculty. You must present your borrower card to obtain Reserve materials. to find out what is "on reserve" check the library catalogue under its RESERVE DESK option. Reserve materials can be searched here by course or instructor. Reserve materials are also listed in the full library catalogue.
The Reference/Reading room offers a quiet study environment. Conversations above a whisper are discouraged. Students who wish to discuss assignments may choose the Group Study room. Computers for research, and email are available in the Reference/Reading room.
Student recommendations for books, journals and audio-visual materials to be added to the collection are most welcome. Drop your suggestions off at the Reference Desk or submit the Recommendation for Purchase form .
