The Dr. C.R. Barrett Library is a unique resource, housing one of Canada's largest marine related collections. The collections support research and teaching at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University and the Engineering Technology Centre of the College of the North Atlantic. They also serve the Newfoundland and Labrador marine, fisheries and engineering industries. The collections are particularly strong in the following fields:

Barrett Library holdings comprise 60 000 items (books, reports, proceedings, bound periodical volumes). The library maintains current subscriptions to 395 magazines/newspapers. Library users may access more than 4 000 online research and trade journals. Researchers can consult the specialized reference collection. This is supplemented with more than 200 online article indexes which may be searched while visiting the Barrett Library. The library's audiovisual holdings include 1275 videotapes, 175 films, audio cassettes, slide sets and several hundred CD-ROMs and diskettes. The Library maintains files of ship drawings and company design manuals. All materials are listed in the Memorial University Libraries catalogue .
Faculty, staff and students at the Fisheries and Marine Institute may access the collections of all Memorial University Libraries in person or online. They may connect remotely to licensed and open access ejournal and etext collections, and to online article indexes and reference resources. Faculty, staff and students at the Engineering Technology Centre of the College of the North Atlantic may use the collections of any Memorial University library. They have remote access to a limited collection of online resources through the catalogue.
