I started taking a serious interest in photography about ten years ago and having worked with crystal structures in the Chemistry Department until I retired in 2004, I started searching for subjects with geometrical relationships and repetitions. These are seldom perfect symmetries but I see them in most of my work. Admittedly, sometimes a landscape is just a landscape but almost always it was an element of either translational or point symmetry that drew my attention, even if the eventual photograph neglected it.

"Group of Seventeen" is a montage which illustrates the seventeen two dimensional symmetry groups, and the only work which includes fragments of perfect symmetry.

Contact me at jbridson@mun.ca for further information on my work.

It probably fits the stereotype of a sociologist that I photograph graffiti. But I am attracted to the messy and ephemeral side of urban landscapes: reflections in glass windows; excessive signage; piles of discarded junk; the effects of weather, neglect, and vandalism. No Canadian has recorded this side of urban life better than Fred Herzog who has been documenting Vancouver since the 1950s. But I have a split personality as a photographer. I also spend endless hours "stalking" heritage buildings in St. John's seeking the precise time of day when they look their best.

My photographs in Foursights record some of the graffiti and street artists in the Queen Street West area of Toronto, where graffiti is allowed. The oldest photographs date from 2005. The green woman is from an alley in nearby Kensington Market. Most graffiti artists in Toronto are white or Asian men who appear to be from relatively affluent backgrounds. Women graffiti artists are definitely a minority. My photographs record a variety of techniques: stencilling, spraying paint on walls, and the use of paper (such as the white bats which bear the haunting message "AIDS is the new love"). Few artists in this area create explicitly political images. I do not sell photographs of graffiti and street art but I happily give them to the artists and their friends.

The photograph of downtown St. John's was taken in a storm this past autumn. For a few moments the sun was shining while it was raining and snowing at the same time. This fleeting scene was the view from my apartment balcony. The used clothes for sale, which are displayed at the foot of the sign "Huh?," is a street scene in London, UK.

In 2004, the Standardized Patient Program in the Faculty of Medicine moved to a new space with 10 teaching clinic rooms for medical students. The walls, though fresh and bright, seemed bare. As our new environment took shape, something personal was needed to counteract the sterile environment. It was a perfect place for my photographs. This became my first exhibition.

Photographic images provide an opportunity to learn and appreciate both the commonality and the diversity that exists amongst us all. As my enjoyment of photography has grown, the way I see the world has changed. Shifting to the left or right, up or down gives a new perspective. I've learned to see the small elements as well as the bigger picture. I appreciate every day textures and colours as well as the extraordinary. These photos represent how I view the world from where I stand at a given moment.
