The Gauntlet Press Collection of the Queen Elizabeth II Library represents the remarkable poetic and artistic partnership between Canadian poet Richard Outram and Canadian artist Barbara Howard. It is the product of a generous bequest from the Literary and Artistic Estates of Richard Outram and Barbara Howard, made, in conjunction with the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto, in 2007. The collection includes books as well as broadsides from the imprint's letterpress and electronic eras, along with copies of Outram's commercially-published books, books from Outram's personal library, and selected items of correspondence and ephemera.
Librarians and staff at Memorial University have created a comprehensive website that includes information about both Outram and Howard, information about Gauntlet Press, as well as links to a virtual exhibition of Gauntlet Press works
The virtual exhibition of Gauntlet Press publications may be viewed on the Digital Archives Initiative website. The works shown range from first collaborative publications, which antedate Outram and Howard's assumption of the Gauntlet Press imprint, to their mature letterpress works (including the stunning book-length sequences Creatures, Locus, Thresholds, and Arbor, all reproduced entire), to a sampling of electronic books and broadsides (including Tundra Swans, the final publication of the Gauntlet Press).
An adjunct to the Gauntlet Press Collection, Robert D. Denham's Richard Outram/Barbara Howard Collection contains one-hundred-and-thirty items. The collection contains eighty-six items produced by Outram and Howard that are not in the Gauntlet Press Collection, including a small number that were produced under the Gauntlet Press imprint. For more information visit the link above.
The collection may be searched online by using the Memorial University of Newfoundland Libraries' Catalogue. The collection is not open for browsing. Items from the collections do not circulate but can be viewed at the Archives and Special Collections reading room (located immediately behind the Centre for Newfoundland Studies service desk).
For more information about the collection please contact librarian Patrick Warner at the QEII Library.
