The Map Room, located on the main floor of the Queen Elizabeth II Library, originated in Memorial's Geography Department. This library holds the largest collection of cartographic materials in Newfoundland and Labrador: over 95,000 sheet maps, 5300 atlases and reference materials and over 45,000 air photographs covering the province. The collection has world-wide coverage with an emphasis on Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, and the oceans around the province.
The Map Room holds material from 1900 to the present. Any material that is pre-1900 in the collection is a "facsimile" of the original item. Pre-1900 cartographic materials of Newfoundland and Labrador are housed in the Center for Newfoundland Studies
There are a handful of pre-1900 non-Newfoundland and Labrador maps kept in the RARE section of Center for Newfoundland Studies
The Map Room serves the entire University community but members of the general public are also welcome to use the collection.
The collection is accessible during regular building hours for the Queen Elizabeth II Library though staff are only present during regular office hours (see below). This includes reserve material for assignments. Please note that reserve material cannot be signed out or removed from the Map Room. Airphotos and some CD's can only be accessed during staff hours.
All print material (atlases, books, etc.) and most maps can be searched using Memorial Libraries catalogue. Airphotos, Canadian topographic maps and hydrographic charts can be accessed through their respective paper indexes located in the Map Room.
Map Room staff are available to provide reference assistance and GIS services to users. Appointments can be made for assistance with GIS projects.
A Memorial University identification card is required in order to sign out materials. Most maps circulate for two weeks for undergraduates and 4 months for graduate students and faculty. Atlases located in "Map-Atlas" can be signed out at the QEII Library circulation desk for the card holders entitlement. This material can also be renewed. Material located in Map-Ref, OS Atlas 1 or OS Atlas 2 may be signed out with permission from Map Room staff but only for a short period of time, 1 - 3 days.
