Thesaurus

Below is a list of the main subject headings used in this bibliography. These cover various types of construction methods, materials and problems; illustrations used in the publications; sections of the house, such as kitchens, chimneys, fireplaces, stairs, doors, etc.; types of publications, such as bibliographies and indexes, research guides, dictionaries, etc.; native housing and artifacts; types of homes, such as ranch-houses, igloos, wigwams and tipis, solar homes, etc.; types of communities, such as mining camps, fishing communities, communal settlements, etc.; housing designs and styles, such as the house/barn, tilts, shanties, etc.; furnishings, implements and tools, etc.; utilities such as heating and ventilation, etc.

In order to use this bibliography effectively, it is recommended that you at least glance through the list. In addition, you can narrow down the results of a search by adding place names. Two place names are listed in the subject headings whenever a publication refers to a particular location: 1) the appropriate province or territory, written in full (e.g., "Alberta"); and, 2) the city, town, region, township, etc., written as the name of the town, plus the abbreviated name of the province or territory in which the town or city is located (e.g., "Waterloo, Ont."). Thus, you can search for an individual town, or for any information covering an entire province, territory or region (e.g., "Northern Canada Region").

Provincial or territorial designations added to individual towns in the subject headings are abbreviated as follows: B.C., Alta., Sask., Man., Ont., Que., N.B., N.S., P.E.I., Nfld., N.W.T., and Yukon Terr.

Other types of places are listed as well, including names of Indian villages or reserves (e.g., Ninstints Village, B.C.; Hochelaga; Huronia, etc.), names of reconstructed villages (e.g., "Village Historique Acadien"; "Mennonite Village Museum" ); names of particular colonies (e.g., Barr Colony).

The results can also be narrowed down by listing ethnic or native groups, such as Inuit, Mennonites in Canada, Ukrainians in Canada, Iroquois Indians, etc.

These are the types of construction, according to materials used, in the subject headings: Balewall Construction; Bark Construction; Bone Construction; Brick Construction; Concrete Construction; Earth Construction; Fabric Construction; Glass Construction; Log Construction; Metal Construction; Plants in Construction; Plastic Construction; Plywood Construction; Skin Construction; Snow Construction; Sod Construction; Stackwall Construction; Stone Construction; Wood Construction. Within those categories, subject headings for individual types of dwellings, such as mamateeks, wigwams and tipis, igloos, tilts, shanties, prefabricated/modular houses, cottages, bungalows, ranch-houses, farmhouses, etc. are also listed.

To narrow the results further, you can add keywords such as "research guides"; "heritage preservation and conservation"; "discovery and exploration"; "analysis and appreciation"; "reports and advice"; "building manuals"; "directories"; "catalogues"; "housing designs", "architectural styles"; "bibliographies and indexes"; "agenda papers"; "building codes and regulations"; "guidebooks"; "standards, specifications, etc."; "reminiscences, letters, diaries, etc."; "women's history"; and so on.
