Q. What types of files can I read?
The file formats natively supported varies by reader:
Sony Reader Touch: PDF, EPUB, TEXT, BBeB Book, RTF (Word and HTML with conversion). Instructions.
Kobo Reader: PDF, EPUB
However, you can download the free Calibre software, which enables you to convert multiple types of files to .EPUB, the standard eBook format supported by all our readers. Calibre allows you to convert .PDF, .DOC, .HTML, .MOBI, .RTF, .TXT, plus others.
Q. How much storage do they have?
Sony Touch PRS600: 380 MB (up to 350 books)
Sony Touch PRS350: 1 GB (up to 1200 books)
Kobo Reader: 1 GB (up to 1000 books)
Q. How long will the batteries last?
Sony Touch Readers: Up to 7500 page turns (up to 2 weeks)
Kobo Reader: Up to 10,000 page turns (up to 2 weeks)
Q. Can I browse the internet or do wireless downloading?
Not with the Sony readers. To download content, you must connect the reader to your computer with the supplied USB cable. The Kobo has Wi-Fi connectivity with the Kobo online store, but you need access to a wireless internet connection and a Kobo account. You cannot browse the internet/check email on the Kobo.
Q. Do I need to install any software on my computer?
That depends on what you want to read and which eBook reader you are using. You can transfer library eBooks and e-journal articles, and any files in PDF or EPUB format to the readers without installing any additional software. For certain file types or to download eBooks from other websites, free software may be required.
Q. Will they work with a MAC?
Yes. All our readers are MAC compatible.
Q. How do I limit my search to eBooks in the library catalogue?
Click "Advanced Search". Click on the "item format" drop-down list, and select "Etext". Note: Currently, not all library eBooks can be read on a reader. Only eBooks with individual chapters in .PDF or .HTML can be downloaded to a reader.
Q. Can I make a request that the Library purchase a particular eBook?
Yes. You may make a suggestion that the Library purchase an eBook, just as you can for a print book.
Q. Can I highlight and make notes on any of the readers?
Only on the Sony Touch readers.
Q. Can I save/print any of the notes I make on the Sony Reader?
Yes. You can connect the reader to your computer and view notes in the Reader Library, export them as a Word file, and save and/or print them. Instructions.
Q. Are they water resistant?
No. Please do not get any of the readers wet, do not drop the readers, or expose to excessive shock, or extremes of light, temperature, moisture or vibration.
