Borrowing

Your MUN Campus Card is your identification card, and also your library card. You must register with the Circulation Desk to obtain Library privileges and obtain your 4-digit PIN number. Your Campus Card is necessary to sign out and to renew material. Your PIN Number is needed for off-campus access to various databases and e-journals and "My Account" in the library catalogue.

NOTE: Be sure to update your Campus Card at the beginning of each semester to secure Library privileges.

Faculty and staff may borrow books for 4 months and journals for 1 week, except for the most current issues which do not circulate. Books can be renewed, unless someone else has put a HOLD on them. Books may be RECALLED 2 weeks after the initial check-out date if required by another patron. You will be notified by email and required to return the item. Books may be recalled IMMEDIATELY if needed for Reserve.

Equipment Loans

The Library has digital voice recorders, microphones, eBook readers (Kobo and Sony readers), portable DVD players, and sets of personal response systems ("clickers") available to borrow, and we are continuing to add new equipment. For more information, please enquire at the circulation desk about what is available to facilitate your teaching and research.

Film and Streaming Video Collections

The film collection is located behind the Circulation Desk and includes DVDs, and some VHS tapes. Visit our Film and Streaming Video Collections page for more information, and for lists of films by subject.

NEW: Our DVD/video collection now circulates, with the exception of the Shakespeare collection. Users may borrow them for one week loan. DVD/videos can still be placed on Reserve upon request.

Photocopying

There are three photocopiers available on the main level of the Ferriss Hodgett Library. Faculty & staff may charge photocopying to their departmental account. Please check with the Reference Desk if you need the photocopy code for your department. Copies from Microforms are available from the Circulation Desk at a cost of $0.20 cents per copy.

MUN is committed to compliance with copyright laws, and all photocopying should comply with the Copyright Act. Please read the University's Use of Public Photocopiers for more specific guidance.

Reserves and E-Reserves (637-6200 ext. 6113)

Library materials can be placed on short term loans, for 2 hours, 1 day, or 2 days. A RESERVE FORM must be filled out for each item. Faculty & staff can choose to complete the green paper Reserve forms available at the library, or the online Reserve form. Contact the Reserves Desk for more information or assistance.

In accordance with MUN's Use of Copyright Materials policy and the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada (AUCC) Fair Dealing Policy photocopies of required readings cannot be placed on reserve without the permission of the copyright holder/s. The library is permitted to place the following on reserve:

MUN Libraries will purchase copies of works not in their collections in order to place the work itself on reserve, with the exception of textbooks adopted for courses.

Placing digital copies of required readings (e.g. scans of book chapters or articles) on course websites such as Sharepoint or D2L, or on personal websites, without the permission of the copyright holder/s is a violation of the Copyright Act. Please see MUN's guidelines on course management systems. The library recommends the use of its E-reserve services to facilitate student access and support.

Librarians Louise McGillis or Crystal Rose are happy to answer any questions or concerns that faculty and staff may have about Copyright and Fair Dealing and how it applies to the use of teaching materials at MUN.

Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement

Where will your research take you? If you require borrowing privileges at other institutions in North America, you can get an ASIN Borrowing Card from our Library before you leave. Your ASIN card gives you borrowing privileges at participating libraries in Canada and the United States.
