Important update: EBSCO ebook downloads (effective April 26, 2026)

Starting April 26, 2026, users who download full EBSCO ebooks for offline reading will be required to use Thorium Reader. Adobe Digital Editions will no longer be supported for this purpose.

This change does not affect:

  • DRM-free titles (DRM stands for digital rights management. It refers to technologies used by publishers to restrict how an ebook is accessed.)
  • Reading EBSCO ebooks online in your web browser

Download Thorium Reader

Thorium Reader is a free, open-source application developed by EDRLab. It offers enhanced accessibility features compared to Adobe Digital Editions, and is available for Windows/macOS/Linux.

If you wish to download EBSCO ebooks onto your computer, you must install Thorium Reader on your device. To install on a Memorial-owned computer, you may require assistance of ITS staff.

Thorium Reader is not currently available for mobile devices such as iPads or cell phones. Thorium Reader installation is not required in order to read an EBSCO ebook online in your web browser.

Getting started

You will be prompted to enter a one-time EBSCO passphrase the first time you open a protected ebook in Thorium on a device. This passphrase will be provided by EBSCO when you initiate the ebook download.
