What We Do
Cataloguing
This is the process of adding standardized descriptions to a database of resources collected by the library (the library catalogue). Cataloguing records provide various types of information including:
- descriptive information (title, author, publication details, etc.)
- subject information (Library of Congress Subject Headings and Medical Subject Headings)
- classification (Library of Congress Classification, National Library of Medicine Classification, etc.)
Metadata
We create high quality metadata and help others create it themselves.
Metadata is "data about data". It is the description of content rather than the content itself. A catalogue record is one form of metadata. More frequently, metadata refers to descriptions of digital objects, like those found in the DAI or Research Repository:
We produce metadata for our digital objects in the DAI and Research Repository. We also help DAI content providers, both at MUN and in our community, offering guidance on metadata content and structure.
