Keywords: Merchant marine, Great Britain, Officers, Ship captains, Ship registers
Filmed from the originals in the Guildhall Library, the captain's registers were compiled from the record of certificates of competency issued to masters, kept by the Registrar General of shipping and seamen from 1851, in accordance with the Mercantile Marine Act of 1850. The Registrar transmitted the details to Lloyds at regular intervals, by special arrangement.
The registers list for each person the name, place and year of birth; the date, number and place of issue of the master's certificate; any other special qualifications; the name and number of each ship served on; the dates of engagement and discharge; the destination of each voyage; casualties; and special awards.
