Robert D. Denham Collection

The one-hundred-and-thirty titles in the Robert D. Denham Collection include books, broadsides and keepsakes produced by the Gauntlet Press, the private press established by Canadian poet Richard OutramImage for gauntlet press website and Canadian artist Barbara Howard. The Collection also holds trade editions of Outram's work as well as works by Richard Outram and Barbara Howard that do not bear the mark of the Gauntlet Press. Many of the items in the Collection are presentation copies, inscribed by Outram for Professor Robert D. Denham and his wife. The Collection also contains Gauntlet Press and other titles that were originally Barbara Howards's personal copies, several of which bear an inscription in Richard Outram's hand.

There are approximately eighty-six items-mostly broadsides, lectures, letters, photographs and other ephemera- produced by Outram and Howard that are not in the Gauntlet Press Collection. Several of these were produced under the Gauntlet Press imprint: "Notes on William Blake's The Tyger" (1997); two Christmas keepsakes. "Proportioned to the Groove" (1995) and "Lindisfarne Priory" (1994); George Johnston's poem "Firefly Evening" (1997); and a Valentine's Day keepsake from 2000 "Consolations of the Savant." Forty-eight of these works--including the five identified above as Gauntlet Press works--have been digitally copied and added to Memorial University Libraries' Digital Archive Initiative.

The Collection is not yet catalogued. A bibliography of the titles held in the Collection may be viewed on Memorial's Digital Archives Initiative website. The Collection is not open for browsing. To see physical copies of items in the collection, or to find out more about the collection, please contact Special Collections Librarian, Patrick Warner, at pwarner@mun.ca.
